Ombudsman participates in Korczak seminar in Geneva
The Mission of the Republic of Poland along with the International Korczak Association invited Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia Mr. Juris Jansons to the international Janusz Korczak seminar in Geneva.
Dr. Janusz Korczak was a Polish-Jewish pediatrician, children’s author and educator. He became famous for his innovative approach to pedagogy and for his personal sacrifice for the children, especially orphans and problematic ones. A concept he was advocating for, was that children have rights to be respected and that they should be free to form and to express their own view and to strongly influence their lives at home.
Mr. Juris Jansons also led a presentation about the availability of free education in Latvia.
One of the priorities of the Ombudsman’s Office of the Republic of Latvia in the field of children rights is availability of free education. According to more than one legal act (The Declaration of Human Rights, Convention on the Rights of the Child and others), education shall be free and available at least in elementary stage.
