Symposium “Autonomy and mental healthcare: a legal analysis” takes place on 13 November in Riga (link to live stream)

Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia, in cooperation with the University of Latvia, on November 13 is holding a symposium to draw attention to the legal perspective of person’s autonomy in mental healthcare.

The participants of the symposium will discuss and evaluate the possibilities of improving national mental health regulatory framework and applying practice in a way that is consistent with international human rights principles and norms, as well as discuss possible solutions to better protect human rights and promote human autonomy in mental health care.

Symposium speakers will be representatives of international organizations, including national human rights institutions of the Council of Europe member states, internationally recognized legal expert.

Representatives of courts, prosecutor’s offices, bar associations, orphans’ courts, Latvian psycho-neurological hospitals, and psychiatrists, as well as representatives of responsible ministries, are invited to the symposium.

The working language of the events is English with a translation into Latvian.

The symposium will be held at the House of Sciences of the University of Latvia, Riga, Jelgavas Street 3, Alfa Hall.
